Wondering whether to choose an XS, S, M or L silk scrunchie? Here is the detail I want every Kaleja Silks customer to know: our four standard sizes have the same elasticity and designed holding strength. The main difference is the amount of silk fabric, which changes how full and visible the scrunchie looks in your hair.

I am Sabine Kaleja, founder of Kaleja Silks. We created four sizes so customers could choose an accessory based on their style rather than being forced into a size simply because of their hair thickness. That is why I start this guide with appearance, not a claim that L is for thick hair and XS is for fine hair.

What is the difference between XS, S, M and L silk scrunchies?

Size Visual effect When I would choose it
XS The slimmest, almost invisible When I want a very discreet accessory
S Small and understated For an everyday ponytail or active routine
M Fuller and more visible When the hair tie should be part of the outfit
L The fullest statement look When I want a noticeable silk detail

These are visual descriptions, not four different strength categories. Within the standard XS, S, M and L range, the designed elasticity and hold are the same.

Why are XS and S the most popular?

In our experience, XS and S are the most popular sizes. My interpretation is that many people prefer a hair accessory that feels subtle rather than taking centre stage. They can be a comfortable aesthetic choice for ordinary days or for more active moments, such as a workout, when you want the accessory to stay visually understated.

That does not mean everyone doing sport should buy XS, or that hair thickness cannot affect individual comfort. The point is that we did not create these sizes as a technical hold scale. I always recommend checking how the ponytail feels with your own hair and avoiding excessive tension.

When does XS make the most sense?

Choose XS when you want the least visible silk-covered hair tie. It is a small detail rather than a prominent scrunchie. I like the idea of XS for someone who prefers a minimal look, uses hair accessories regularly or wants silk to blend into the hairstyle.

When should you choose S?

S is a natural next step if XS feels too discreet visually. It still looks refined and relatively minimal, but you notice a little more silk around the elastic. For many customers it is a versatile middle ground between almost invisible and intentionally decorative.

See the S silk hair ties. I would choose between XS and S mostly by looking at product images on hair and deciding which silhouette fits your daily style.

What makes M and L different?

M and L are for people who like the hair tie itself to be seen. They contain more silk fabric, so the scrunchie appears fuller, softer and more decorative. M adds clear volume without taking over the whole hairstyle; L makes the strongest visual statement in our standard size range.

See M silk hair ties and L silk hair ties. Do not interpret the extra fabric as proof of a stronger elastic or a universal recommendation for thicker hair.

Should hair thickness decide scrunchie size?

Not automatically. Hair thickness, texture and the way you tie a ponytail can affect personal comfort, but our size names describe the amount of silk fabric and the finished look. The holding strength was designed to be the same. If you hear someone say that only L can hold thick hair, that is not how we designed this range.

If your ponytail slips, try a different wrapping tension and hairstyle before assuming a larger silk cover will solve the problem. And if an accessory feels tight or pulls, loosen it, regardless of size.

What about hair dents and daily care?

A larger-looking scrunchie does not automatically guarantee fewer hair creases. Pressure, time, hair moisture and hair texture still matter. I have a separate article on silk scrunchies and hair creases. If you are wondering how to keep the fabric looking good, see my silk scrunchie care guide.

My simple way to choose

Ask yourself one question: Do I want the hair tie to disappear into the hairstyle or to be part of the look? If you want it subtle, start with XS or S. If you want it visible, start with M or L. That is the choice we designed the four sizes to offer.

Frequently asked questions

Is XS less stretchy than L?

No. Our four standard sizes are designed with the same elasticity and holding strength; the amount of surrounding silk fabric changes.

Are M and L made for thick hair?

They create a fuller visual effect, but they are not a separate stronger-hold tier for thick hair.

Which size looks the most discreet?

XS is our slimmest option and can be almost unnoticeable when worn.

Which sizes are the most popular?

Based on our experience, XS and S are our most popular standard sizes.
